Idee in de kijker: Billy Bragg over internetmuziek

De Engelse muzikant Billy Bragg schaarde zich onlangs achter het idee om internetmuziek niet langer door de consument te laten betalen, maar wel door het platform dat die muziek aanbiedt. Een beetje zoals bij radio dus.

In een tijd waar (vooral) jongeren peer-to-peer muziek gaan uitwisselen, vindt Bragg het absurd dat de muziekindustrie haar eigen 'luisteraars' vervolgt.

"There's a huge amount of peer-to-peer exchange going on, and what does the music industry do? It tries to criminalize our audience. How ridiculous is that? These are kids who are getting into our stuff and getting so excited about it, they're passing it on to their friends - and the music industry's answer to that is to put them into prison," aldus Bragg.

Volgens Bragg zou het verstandiger zijn alternatieve bronnen van inkomsten aan te spreken, zoals adverteerders of internet providers: "It's the basic principle on which radio operates. Radio is free to you as a consumer, but when my song gets played on the radio, I get paid for it."
